Karto provides two free map generation services that allow robot developers to obtain a map generated from their own sensor data: a file-based service and a web service.
The Karto Plug-In can be used to log sensor data to a file that can then be uploaded to Karto's servers. Once the data is received, Karto's map generation server will analyze the data, generate a map and email the resulting map image back to the user. The easy-to-use plug-in enables developers to quickly test whether their sensor and odometry data acquisition is sufficient for generating maps.
The Karto Thin-Client Mapping library provides an API for integrating map generation into a custom robot control application. The library is lightweight - all map generation computation is perfomed on Karto servers. The client API provides a simple interface for sending scanner and odometry data to Karto servers and for getting back a map data structure. Using the API a developer can create a custom robot control application that maps and navigates within a previously unknown environment.
